• Pete Delkus signs with the big leagues

In San Francisco meteorologist Steve Raleigh, Channel 9 found a forecaster with Cincinnati TV experience and family roots here to replace Pete Delkus.

Raleigh worked for WLWT-TV in 1986-88, long enough to meet and marry Julie Leis, daughter of Hamilton County Sheriff Simon Leis Jr.

'I love Cincinnati, and I never thought I'd have a chance to come back,' said Raleigh, 43, chief meteorologist for KRON-TV (Channel 4) in San Francisco, the No. 6 TV market. Cincinnati is No. 33.

'We're back in Cincinnati all the time. This is all about family and a life opportunity,' he said. Raleigh and his wife, who married here in 1987, have two boys and two girls, ages 15 to 9.

Raleigh said he has agreed to start at WCPO-TV (Channel 9) on July 18. Delkus signs off today after nine years to go to WFAA-TV in Dallas.

Top among 7 finalists

Raleigh was tops among seven finalists, including staffers Steve Norris and Larry Handley, said Bill Fee, Channel 9 general manager. He also interviewed former Channel 12 meteorologist Mike Buresh, now in Jacksonville.

'Steve has been in and out of Cincinnati for 15 years. He knows the market, the people and the newsmakers,' said Bob Morford, Channel 9 news director.

Morford was impressed that Raleigh, in a job interview, stressed the importance of 'being on the air during severe weather situations.'

Fee praises Raleigh's technology skills, and his smooth on-air presentation.

'He's a very likable person and has a very deep knowledge of meteorology. He'll work well with Clyde, Carol and DJ,' said Fee, referring to anchors Clyde Gray, Carol Williams and sports anchor Dennis Janson.
