Google was set to launch on Thursday a new service intended to give searchers fast links to song lyrics, musical artists and CD titles on the main search results page.
Google Music will allow a user to type in the name of a band, artist, album or song in the main Google search bar special, and results will appear at the top, accompanied by icons of music notes, said Marissa Mayer, vice president of search products and user experience at Google.
Items that can be purchased will have links to merchants for online ordering or downloading, she said. Initial merchant partners include Apple Computer's iTunes service, RealNetworks Rhapsody, eMusic, Amazon.com.

Earthquakes followers have always been among the Bay Area's most loyal fans. Now, they are definitely the most confused.
That has been especially true over the past month, with the soccer team's operators threatening a pullout to Houston even as a furious effort to keep the team in San Jose unfolded.
This week the situation took a turn for the even more confusing. Monday night, a soccer-stadium plan concocted by city officials behind closed doors went kaput before the doors even opened on the exact details.
However, my information is that the proprietors of the Sharks, who were interested in buying the team if the stadium plan materialized, simply could not make the finances work. With the city providing significant subsidies, the two parties hoped the stadium could be constructed for between $60 million and $70 million -- but as the proposal underwent further scrutiny, the figure moved up to $90 million. Also, the Sharks would have been responsible for any cost overruns, a risk they were loathe to take.
Thus, the Sharks' plug was pulled. But does this mean the Earthquakes are packing for Texas?
Not necessarily. The team's investor/operator, the Anschutz Entertainment Group, has talked about leaving town since 2003. And the Earthquakes are still here.

San Jose officials were trying to strike a deal with the owners of the San Jose Sharks hockey team that could have kept the Earthquakes in San Jose.
The owners of the Sharks had indicated interest in buying the Earthquakes if the city would help build a new soccer stadium.
But a city official says talks have come to an end because of disagreements over how to finance the deal.
The Earthquakes' current owner -- Anschutz Entertainment Group -- has received permission from Major League Soccer to move the team to Houston.

Here in South Africa ADSL users have to pay exorbitant rates for both line rental and ISPs. So it works out that buying both services + phone line rental from the state owned monopoly, Telkom, you pay about R549 ($86) per month for a 192 kbps 2GB cap shaped account. Once you have reached the cap you have to couch up +- $12 extra per GB
I wonder if the South Africa versions MPAA and RIAA are in cahoots with Telkom?? This is one way to curve illegal pirated trading of music and movies. Anyway you look at this. Its lamecastic!

Martin told the forum that the FCC will soon release a report that concludes that offering TV programming a la carte is economically feasible and in the best interest of consumers.

ACLU challenges Patriot Act | CNET News.com: "The American Civil Liberties Union urged the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday to uphold two separate lower court rulings that whittle away at provisions of the U.S. Patriot Act that allow the FBI to secretly demand public information from public libraries and Internet service providers.
At issue in today's hearing are two challenges brought by the ACLU in New York and Connecticut regarding a surveillance provision that was dramatically expanded by Section 505 of the Patriot Act."
