The Register reports that twenty years ago today (19 January 1986), the first computer virus, Brain, was discovered. By modern standards, this was a minor virus, and it spread by floppy disks, which is a far cry from the network-aware worms of today. Still, though, it was the first noted virus, and we've had twenty years of pain and annoyance from it and its successors. Happy birthday, Brain, you and all your little virus friends - just know we're doing our damndest to keep you from having more."

Intel loses market share in own backyard | CNET News.com

Market share figures released by Current Analysis Wednesday show that Intel lost significant PC market share to AMD in U.S. retail channels in the fourth quarter.

Intel executives said Tuesday that they expected to have lost about one point of market share to AMD during a disappointing fourth quarter. That figure refers to worldwide sales of microprocessors during the quarter, an Intel spokesman confirmed. Among U.S. retail PCs, however, the results were more striking.

Intel's share of the U.S. retail PC market fell by 11 percentage points, from 64.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2004 to 53.3 percent, said Sam Bhavnani, senior analyst with Current Analysis. Current Analysis' market share numbers measure U.S. retail sales only, and therefore exclude figures from Dell, which uses its Web site to sell directly to consumers. Dell, the top PC vendor in the U.S., exclusively uses Intel's processors in its PCs. (Sales by online retailers were excluded from the market share analysis as well).
