If a new idea from Philips catches on, the company may not be very popular with TV viewers. The company's labs in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, has been cooking up a way to stop people changing channels to avoid adverts or fast forwarding through ads they have recorded along with their target programme.

The secret, according to a new patent filing, is to take advantage of Multimedia Home Platform - the technology behind interactive television in many countries around the world. MHP software now comes built into most modern digital TV receivers and recorders. It looks for digital flags buried in a broadcast, and displays messages on screen that let the viewer call up extra features, such as additional footage or information about a programme

The new video-on-demand (VOD) deal will make available how-to instructional videos, news and other topics on cable provider Cox Communications' VOD offering, on TiVo boxes and to TVN Entertainment, which distributes programming to other cable operators. Programming will first be available in June; CNET plans to create a similar offering for its own Web site some time in the second half of the year. Gillespie said he expects to get CNET TV on all of the major multiple-systems operators (MSO), or cable providers.

Each program will run about 15 minutes in length, and will contain :15 commercials before and after video runs. A shorter spot is more proportional to the length of the on-demand video. "Our experience is that when you run longer than a :15 online, we get a violent reaction from our viewers," said Gillespie

Roomba takes Frogger to the asphalt jungle | CNET News.com AUSTIN, Texas--It's almost two in the morning and I'm standing in the middle of Austin's Sixth Street, hoping that I'm not going to get hit by a car.

On the other hand, I am hoping--as are 15 or so other people standing nearby--that one of the cars that keep rushing by will crush the tricked-out Roomba robot vacuum cleaner that Make Magazine associate editor Phillip Torrone and Eyebeam R&D fellow Limor Fried are sending back and forth across the street and through traffic.

A computer administrator from Boston, Scott began posting photos from his extensive collection of software and hardware ads, circa 1970s-1980s, at Digitize.textfiles.com last week. Maybe Mac fans can't recall what that Apple II they considered so cutting-edge back in the mid-1980s looked like. Perhaps video-game aficionados forgot that Atari once pinned dreams of dominating the PC market on the now long-forgotten 1450 XLD computer.

Slashdot | Symantec Rethinks Firefox vs IE Vulnerabilities
Last September security software vendor Symantec issued a report claiming IE had fewer critical flaws than Firefox and thus was more secure. Well, it seem they have now rethought that position. 'How we did it before wasn't a fair comparison,' said Oliver Friedrichs, the senior manager of Symantec's security response group. 'It wasn't an apples to apples comparison.' The key was vendor acknowledged critical vulnerabilities. Thus, if Microsoft (or the Mozilla Foundation) didn't agree it was critical, then it didn't get counted.

"In a precedent-setting ruling, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has fined a hosting company for carrying 'objectionable content'. The material in question was White Supremacist postings. From the article: 'The ruling sends a very strong message that Internet servers, if they are aware there is hate content and don't take timely action to remove it, can be held liable,' said the Ottawa lawyer who filed the complaint in February 2002. The individual posters were fined thousands as well."

Comcast to up speeds to 16Mbit down / 1Mbit up

According to a post on Broadbandreports.com, Comcast has begun to rollout speed increases for its gold package to 16Mbit down / 1Mbit up. Finally!

I Recently switch to Comcast for my net access for this very reason. ATT in my area won't roll out fiber to the home for another two years as earliest. (its Ironic fact I currently live in the heart of Silicon Valley and NO IPTV thru ATT) I just only wished comcast would offer 5mbits up instead of just one.

Strike three for Intel | CNET News.com

Intel warned on Friday that its revenue for the first quarter would come in at between $8.7 billion and $9.1 billion, roughly $500 million lower than estimates the company issued in January. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker cited a weak market and a "slight" market share loss.

Analysts generally agree about the market, but are putting more emphasis on the loss of share. Some have pointed to the momentum shown by Advanced Micro Devices, which has been far more aggressive over the past 18 months. The rival chipmaker has been strengthening its ties to PC makers, most prominently with Hewlett-Packard, and keeping prices low.

Google Is Reportedly Switching to AMD - Los Angeles Times
Google Inc. is switching its servers to run on Advanced Micro Devices Inc. chips instead of those made by Intel Corp., according to a Morgan Stanley report.

Google, which has more than 200,000 servers, has started to buy Advanced Micro's Opteron processors with almost all new purchases, Morgan Stanley analyst Mark Edelstone said. He raised his earnings estimates for Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Advanced Micro.

"Most of Google's near-term server purchases will use AMD's Opteron for the first time," Edelstone said. Google "will help AMD to enjoy a significant sequential increase in their server business in the first quarter."

Winning Google as a customer may help Advanced Micro beat analysts' estimates this quarter, San Francisco-based Edelstone wrote.

Need your PC fixed? Get ready to pay up | CNET News.com
Technology is a wonderful thing, when it works. Just as cars run reliably but lawn mowers never start, many people wonder why humans are capable of creating amazing technology but can't make PCs that average people can understand.

As a result, demand for PC support services is booming even as retailers and PC vendors pare down their standard warranties. Fed up with pleasant but unsatisfying support answers, PC users are increasingly willing to pay for support from those companies. Third-party PC support is becoming big business, with Best Buy aggressively promoting the services of the Geek Squad and vendors like Dell jumping to provide their own touch
